Appellate Practice

Appeals happen.  A party gets a favorable key ruling or final decision in a court case, and the other side files an appeal, potentially extending litigation for years to come.

Just like in arbitration or trial, there can be many strategies to consider when filing or defending against an appeal.

Darlene is an experienced appellate attorney, focusing on civil appeals. She has successfully represented clients before the Oregon Court of Appeals, Oregon Supreme Court, the Washington State Court of Appeals, on briefing to the Supreme Court of the United States, and before the Bankruptcy Appellate Panel for the Ninth Circuit.

For trial attorneys seeking the help of appellate counsel, Darlene brings an objective eye and analytical skills to reviewing an underlying case record.  She can assist with an early evaluation of strengths and weaknesses so that clients better understand the risks and costs of an appeal.

Darlene works efficiently and closely with trial counsel to identify to issues with the best chance for success on appeal. Darlene’s strong knowledge of the procedural rules of the appellate courts, and use of oral argument, also give her the edge over attorneys not used to the forum.
